Hi, I’m Khanh Thach, a freelance tour guide. Born and raised in a small town in the Mekong River Delta, South Vietnam, but currently I’m living and working in Ho Chi Minh City, former Saigon.
I established this site with a couple of goals in mind:
- To write more often in English, my third language, both to maintain and enhance my proficiency.
- To share my passion for travel and reveal the wonders of the destinations I’ve personally explored.
Hope you’ll find the site a valuable resource that can partly help you plan your trip to Vietnam, especially the enchanting Mekong River Delta, my hometown.
A brief story about me
Son of a farmer from a rural community in Mekong river delta; since my childhood, I had a dream of pursuing one of three careers when I grew up – an interpreter, a teacher, or a tour guide. My journey towards becoming a tour guide started with an unexpected phone call from an old high school friend while I was actively involved in a foreign language group at university in 2008. He had established a travel company in Saigon and was in need of assistance to lead a group of tourists to the Central Highlands during a busy holiday season. Initially, I hesitated. But after his thorough explanation, I accepted the offer.
The experience changed my career. Finishing the tour, I began to feel like tourism. I thought of changing job. So I attended a professional training course for tour guides and founded my passion of travelling since then- late 2009.
A different place has a different story. A different person has a different idea.
I have been on road for over 12 years and have extensive experience traveling across Vietnam. Some of my tours include picking up tourists at Tan Son Nhat Intl airport or Cambodia Border for Ho Chi Minh city tours, Cu Chi Tunnels, Cao Dai Temple, Vung Tau Beach, Nha Trang Central coastal city and Da Lat Central Highlands. Or sometimes the tours start from Central city of Danang, Hoi An Ancient Town, Hue Citadel, or from Ha Noi Capital, Halong Bay, Sapa Moutain Town.
Now, the most frequently are the tours to Mekong River Delta and Phu Quoc Pearl Islands.
At thesonmekong, I think I know what I am talking about. I’ll try to write as much as I can and as often as I can in my free time to share my travel experiences; while working as a freelance tour guide at the same time. Here you will find new itineraries, go-to guides, photos and videos of the beautiful landscapes across Vietnam and beyond. And it is my sincere hope that these tips will be a useful resource for travelers above all else
